Discipline(s): Costume Design and Theatre Supervisor
Bio: Molly Syrett is a London based costume designer and supervisor for theatre. She trained at The Arts University Bournemouth, graduating in 2015 with a first class honours degree. Since then she has worked as a freelancer across a wide range of theatre and performance based projects. Lockdown has allowed Molly to pursue her interest in millinery and headwear, of which she has a small business – Popmo Crowns – selling handmade headbands made from vintage and preloved materials.
Project title: Halo
Project Description: Halo was inspired by imagining the fire extinguisher as a modern-day fire guardian. This prompted research around protector figures and representations of fire as characters (in human or divine forms) from traditional folklore, ancient mythology, and their modern counterparts. Syrett focused on headpieces as they are often symbolic devices in story-telling; informing the listener about the wearer’s status, personality traits, intentions, wealth, class, affinity with nature and even revealing or concealing their true form – human or spiritual. The halo shape of this headpiece has angelic connotation, implying the good intentions, guardianship and protection with a feminine energy of the fire extinguisher. Materials: Sinamay, glass beads and sequins, velvet headband. All pre-existing and salvaged from previous projects.
