Isle of Wight Heritage Service

Discipline(s): Heritage Service
Bio: The Isle of Wight Heritage Service is part of the city council. Within it, the Museum Service collects and preserves items relating to the Island's material history, archaeology and geology, and displays a range of these collections through its public museums.
Project title: IOW Fire History
Project Description: In response to the fire extinguishers, the curators at the IOW Heritage Service looked through their collection to find objects relating to fire on the Island. The helmet and poster represent just a couple of the 43 objects in their collection that relate to fire.

The first object is a cork helmet from the Isle of Wight Fire Brigade. This helmet dates from circa the 1950s. The helmet belonged to fireman R. Corbett. It has an I Fire Brigade transfer badge on the front.

The second, is a Printers proof for a poster by W.H. Upward and Sons of Newport. They hold two versions of this proof in the collection. One has just the date, venue and word 'FIRE'. On the other is additional detail advertising a demonstration by Newport Fire Services at Newport Football Club and a grand variety concert in the evening at Victoria Wesleyan Methodist Schoolrooms on Monday 13th May 1940.
